Small and mid size agencies and creative companies are stocked with talent. The level and quality of work output is astonishing, with bright creative minds collaborating to produce amazing products and services, leading innovation in the industry.
In many cases, all the in-house expertise, and all the energy spent, is geared towards creating that output, servicing clients, and winning new business. Growth can come quick, and often not in a gradual even pace. Many owners and CEO’s find themselves at an inflection point: the business is growing and they need a level of support beyond what their in-house team can offer.
Growth is a good problem to have, but it’s still a problem and needs structural solutions.
Pitching new business is time consuming and costly, and once business is won, you want to be able to deliver it at a solid margin, without burning the team, growing the organization along the way.
Good operations and practices set you up for continued incremental growth, for clearly understanding how your business is performing and for constantly working to improve margins. Good ops help up-level your internal team, instilling in them sound business practices and mentoring new leaders who are ready to grow.
Hiring full time experienced and senior executives is not only costly, often too costly for small and mid sized agencies, it can also be impactful on your culture. Company culture can be fragile, and a good culture is of incredible importance to the success of a company. New leadership can put their own stamp on the place, for better or worse.
Working with a fractional COO, or starting an operations consulting engagement, allows you to focus on bringing in support and getting things done, with less impact on agency culture.

A veteran of creative advertising agencies and digital agencies, with a career spanning nearly 25 years, Derek van den Bosch has held leadership roles in agencies such as TBWA CHIAT DAY, RED Agency, 160over90 and BLITZ, and has worked for many world class companies such as Wieden and Kennedy, Razorfish and Scopely.
Taking on progressively more complex operations-centric roles, he knows how agencies operate, how work gets delivered, how margins are gained or lost, and how companies can grow successfully. As COO, he led large teams of business leaders, creatives, strategists, account people, producers, developers and support teams through business change and through growth, overcoming challenges and improving agency success.
Now he has founded operator, an operations consultancy and fractional COO service, to help small and mid-size agencies and creative companies overcome many of the same challenges he has faced and solved. Partnering with agency owners and leaders, he helps companies grow, supports business transformations, assists with large new business efforts, improves margins and other operating metrics and helps team members grow and lead.
With operator, agencies and creative companies get deep expertise and knowledge, hands-on implementation and senior counsel, all at a fraction of the cost of hiring a full time COO or operations leader.
A comprehensive ‘ops assessment’ is the ideal way to get deep insights on how your business is functioning and where improvements will be most beneficial.
This goal-based review looks at several key business functions, among them:
Timing:
This in-depth assessment takes 4-8 weeks, depending on the scale and complexity of the organization.
These assessments can sometimes be a heavy lift for the company and the leadership team, so it is recommended to split the assessment in two phases.
Each phase results in findings and recommendations. The implementation of improvements can be handled under a long-term retainer, or on a task by task basis.
A fractional COO engagement starts with the ops assessment, but has the goal to help run the agency operations long-term as COO.
Typically, engagements are semi-annual retainers, with regular office hours and a high degree of visibility in the agency.
If the problem is known and the area of focus is narrow, a full assessment may not be needed.
In this case, ops consulting is available in 10-hour increments, to provide consulting services and support as needed.
Pitch support is available to help evaluate proposals, assist with scoping and pricing, or even be ‘in the room’ when work is being pitched.
Available in 10-hour increments as needed.
